guacamole & The keto diet

The Keto diet is much more than just cutting carbs. The goal is to switch your body from using sugar in the form of carbs to using fat as its main fuel source. The only way to do this is to make sure you get 70-80% of your calories from fat. If you consume too much protein, then you’re body will become adapted to that as your fuel source and you’ll start burning up your muscle mass and still be fat.

One easy and delicious way to increase your fat intake is guacamole. A 1/4 cup of guacamole contains about 90 calories but has 8g of fat, 1 net gram of carbs and 1g of protein.

While you can buy guacamole at the grocery store, I really like to make my own. Its not that hard and really doesn’t take much longer than about 15 minutes. I actually bought a molcajete (Mexican mortar and pestle) at HEB to make my guac. There is something about smashing everything together that I enjoy.

Here is one additional variation that I really like to make. Make your guacamole in a food processor and process everything until its smooth. Then add sour cream and blend it all together. You now have guacamole creama. Not only does it taste great on chicken and fish but it makes a really nice salad dressing.

Linked below is my favorite guacamole recipe from Alton Brown:
